Queens of Comedy show coming in August

In its quest to increase the number of female comedians in the male dominated field of comedy, performing arts movement, Soul Food Comedy, brought Africa’s queen of comedy, Anne Kansiime, last year who performed to a sold out show at Molapo Piazza to inspire and mentor up and coming female comedians in the country. This year, the 8th of August will mark a milestone in the comedy industry as the first ever female comedy show dubbed Queens of Comedy will take place at Gaborone Sun.

Karabo Musa of Soul Food Comedy spoke to Time Out; “In November 2014 we hosted our first International act, the award winning Anne Kansiime from Uganda as a headliner for the show. Our goal was to grow comedy, inspire and develop comedians in Botswana particularly female comedians. This we have achieved and we are launching this as an annual event to promote our female cast of comedians themed Queens of Comedy,”

The comedy show will be hosted during the women’s month, August, and it will feature three extremely talented female comedians Enigma, Rekunde and Mosetsana. Musa further noted; “They are young, witty and talented game changers in the true sense. We are optimistic that this event will open doors for female representation in comedy and provide a platform for the artists to get prepared and hopefully join Anne Kansiime on her two city tour of Mafikeng on the 25th  of September and Gaborone on the 26th  of the same month. This show will be used to really expose these young women and prepare them for the international stage. We believe that in three to five years, Botswana should be able to export female comedians of Kansiime’s calibre and sell out shows around the globe.  In the same breath, we believe that we will have a few Trevor Noah’s in the Soul Food comedy stable in the not so distant future.”
