A legend bows out

BONGANI MALUNGA

A champion, a leader, a wizard, a legend; as fitting as they seem, the mentioned titles do not do justice in terms of describing the impact of one Pontsho Moloi in local football. A fitting end has seen the forward end his playing career with a league winner’s medal, the perfect storybook ending for a player who personifies the championship spirit every player should aspire to have.
Moloi could best be described as a striker with a playmaker’s soul who played as a winger. The former Notwane player accumulated five league winner’s medals (2008, 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2016) in the last nine years to take his place amongst the country’s most successful players of all time in terms of league honours.
Most importantly, he was the voice of the dressing room and an excellent motivational speaker, his positive impact at Chiefs will see him earn a place at some capacity within the club.
Chiefs Public Relations Officer Clifford Mogomotsi gave a glowing tribute to Moloi by saying, “He has been a professional all career long. He has seen it all, the good, the bad and the ugly. He has been an inspirational figure for our club, his tireless efforts at community level should also be applauded, he was the glue of the team because he would create a harmonious atmosphere in the dressing room. He was a part of our first group to win the league in 2008 and also helped deliver our first Coca Cola Cup. All of our milestones have occurred with him as a vital piece, he is a true legend. The board is currently exploring options of keeping him within our structures. He will not be lost to football.”
Moloi was also a part of the Zebras team that made their maiden AFCON appearance in 2012. The only trophy that has eluded him is the Mascom Top 8.
