We were first exposed to fascinators during the British royal wedding in 2011, when Prince William wed his bride Kate Middleton in an extravagant wedding fi t for a king. Outlandish, colourful, and fabulous are the words that best describe fascinators.
Thirty year old married mom of four Keatlaretse Kajane, has carved a niche market for herself designing and custom making fascinators and hats for those who wish to give their outfi t a unique, and distinguished flair. “I became interested in hats, fascinators and cocktails 10 years ago, realizing that head-wear was such a fascinating fashion accessory but yet underrated. I make hats for brides and bridesmaids, my friends, women in church or anyone attending a special occasion.” The hats are custom made to match a client’s outfit or any item of clothing, whether a bag, shoe or handbag, taking into consideration the tone of the occasion.
“I’ve always had a passion for fascinators, but my crafting skills were not perfected.” Keatlaretse decided to take her passion to the next level and went for training in South Africa taught by famous and popular millinery to the stars Thembi Mabule, whose designs are worn by businesswomen, politicians and celebrities during national events such as the star-studded Durban July and the annual national state of the nation address for women in politics.
“You may have realized that Queen Elizabeth of England is most of the times, if not all the times, wearing a hat. Honourable Member of Parliment Mma Tshireletso is also one of those that you will see with a hat. We tend to overlook that we need to adorn our heads in order to complete an outfit,” she explains.
