- Will not protest for the sake of party stability
The just ended Botswana National Front Youth League (BNFYL) Congress might further divide the BNF youth. Indications are that some league members are not happy with the outcome of the congress and in particular question the fairness of the electoral process. Speaking to The Gazette, the BNFYL secretary general, Arafat Khan, said his team was not happy about the outcome of the congress but they will not protest. “We are not happy the way the elections were conducted, we are not happy about the way the other lobby group stole the election before us. I was lucky to win, we will not elaborate on what happened but we are meeting the mother party this week to lodge our grievances,” he lamented.
Tona Selala, who is also a councillor for Thamaga, lost the presidency to Gantsi Makatane. He however blamed his loss on the BNF Central Committee which he complained had too much interference in the league’s affairs. He said the party constitution needs to be followed to the letter when campaigning. Former President of the University of Botswana Student Representative Council (UB SRC), Richard Khumoekae, who lost against Khan said the BNF needs to revisit its election process; he said they must be an election board within the party. He said he was disappointed that some people had more than one cards. The former president of the BNFYL Tona Mooketsi said he was happy with the way the elections were conducted. He called for the new team to work collectively together as a team for the sake of progress.
