Cheetahs suffer first loss

Early league pacesetters BDF Cheetahs suffered their first defeat of the season this past weekend against the University of Botswana Rhinos. The victory, which was UB Rhinos’ second successive win since the league started, will help them close the gap on the Botswana Rugby Union A-Division League’s leading teams.

The Cheetahs are the league’s strongest starters after winning their first two matches; they were awarded five points after Mochudi Rugby Club (MRC) failed to honour their fixture against the army side last month.

After the awarding of the points, they had accumulated 14 points to command a three point lead over Botho University Ryders and Gaborone Hogs. Ryders and the Hogs are both on 11 points after three rounds of league action.

A defeat against Rhinos has left Cheetahs with their first setback of the season and they are at risk of being surpassed by their title rivals in the next weekend of fixtures. Rhinos are the only team in the league with a 100 percent record and two more wins could catapult them to the top of the log standings.
They are currently in fourth spot after accumulating eight points so far this season. In another result the league’s bottom two, Francistown Tuskers and MRC, squared off as both teams were chasing their first win of the season. The match ended 35-5 in favour of Tuskers and  MRC is the only team in the league without a victory this season.
