Powell to replace Sosome?

Defensive midfielder Abednico Powell is training with Gaborone United with the aim of earning a move to the club. The former Township Rollers midfielder started training last week Thursday and  this publication understands that Rahman Gumbo is keen to reunite with the player he once coached at Rollers.

Powell could sign for Moyagoleele if he impresses during his training spell. He would be a direct replacement for versatile midfielder Tebogo Sosome who is widely tipped to join Jwaneng Comets. Sosome has reportedly been hired by the Debswana Jwaneng Mine  and  has  opted to join Comets due to geographical reasons.

The Zimbabwean’s departure from Popa coincided with Powell’s loss of form; the midfielder struggled to regain his place as a regular starter at Rollers. GU’s officials could neither confirm nor deny the possibility of signing Powell when interviewed by Gazette Sport.

“He is just training with the rest of the squad, he joined us last week and we allowed him to continue training with us. The coach has not yet given any indication that he wants to sign him, if he does we will make a move for him. At the moment we have no official news concerning Powell,” GU officials stated.

The 2013 Mascom Top 8 winners have also been linked with a reunion with their former player, Dipsy Selolwane who has been training with them since representing the club in his testimonial game against Platinum Stars. Selolwane featured and scored during GU’s 2-1 loss to Mochudi Centre Chiefs in the Barclays Kabelano Charity Cup this past weekend as a guest player, and this had fuelled speculation that he could join them on a one year deal.

GU officials remained coy on the subject,  only saying, “He is only training to keep himself fit. We would be happy to sign him if he or the coach expresses an interest in signing with GU.”
