Gaborone based boxing club SSKB are the hosts of the highly anticipated 6th national Inter-club Championships billed for this weekend. This was revealed by Botswana Boxing Association(BOBA) last week.

This year, many Interclub tournaments were postponed due to “administrative issues” according to BOBA Spokesperson Kenny Maragana.
Maragana touted this weekend’s event as the one to look out for. He said the tourney is important because it focuses on development and boxers’ tactical aspect. “There is also where boxers showcase their talent and book themselves a place in the national team,” said Maragana.

The BOBA Spokesperson said the tournament targets to expose new boxers to the world of boxing and talent identification to improve standard of our boxing. He also said the idea to organize interclub tournaments is to spread boxing throughout the breadth and length of the land.

BOBA expects its entire 18 member clubs to honor the event this Saturday. Boxing lovers are anticipating good fights as this event comes hot on the heels of Botswana’s good performance at the recent Zone IV Championships held in South Africa. Botswana was represented by 10 pugilists who garnered six gold medals and four silver medals. The team secured 37 points and were overall winners followed by South Africa with 18 points and thirdly Angola with nine points.

This 6th Inter-club tournament is also in a month of BOBA’s Boxing Awards which is billed for end of this month. Local boxers will be willing to put an impressive performance so that by 30 May, voters will consider them as ideal winners as this will be the last Inter-club tournament before the BOBA awards.

The hosts boast boxers such as Keoagile Rantutu and Onkarabile Mothibedi. Rantutu won the welterweight category at this year’s Best of the Best tournament. Last year Mothibedi gave one of the feared local boxer Oteng Oteng a run for his money in last year’s national championships. The fight won the best bout award and has now made Mothibedi a household name for the impressive performance despite losing the bout by knock out.
