The winner of the Lora Arts contest, which has been running since last year October will be announced this weekend at Thapong Visual Arts Centre in Gaborone. The artists who have made it to the top 10 were selected by the public based on Facebook ‘Likes’ as the official voting system. The visual arts contest was inclusive of all types of visual and fine arts media such as photography, painting, drawing and graphic design.

The overall winner of the contest will walk away with P10, 000, while the other finalists will get art supplies. The award show will be held on the 15th of February and will be preceded by a weeklong exhibition expo of the finalists’ work for public appreciation. Some of the finalists include Kago Monageng, Willy Makgobi, Kago Kgabaetsile and Tebogo Cranwell.
The Expression Contest arts competition, which was an online competition where artists got to promote their works through a large fan base, is an initiative by a local a non-profit website where artists in Botswana upload and display their portfolios as an online database of their art.

Founder of Lora Arts Rosy Sbrana, an artist herself said in an interview with Time Out that, “The Lora Arts expression contest is the first competition of its kind to take place in Botswana. This contest will allow the public to become more familiar with the visual arts community in Botswana and to initiate a modern approach in the way we view art by emphasizing the use of technology as a primary source for promotion.”
The contest was in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, Thapong Visual Arts Centre, Impression House and Maxwell Dichi Creative Studios.
