Nico targets foreign coach

After parting ways with coach Kenneth Mogae last week, Nico United has resolved to seek the services of a foreign coach. Nico chairman Mothusi Taolo has revealed that the club will prefer to employ a foreign national as their next head coach as opposed to a local one. On why they parted ways with Mogae, Taolo said numerous factors led to the coach’s departure, chief among them what they perceived as underachieving in terms of league results.

Mogae led Nico to the Mascom Top 8 semi-finals with an impressive 3-1 aggregate win over Mochudi Centre Chiefs last month. However, management was not impressed with the club’s league form. Nico United is currently 11th on the log, 10 points away from a position that could earn them a place in the Mascom Top 8 tournament next season. Taolo also revealed that they have turned down all inquiries they received from local coaches concerning the vacant coaching job at the Selibe Phikwe based club.

“Our aim is to find a coach before the end of the year. We will follow the right procedure by advertising the job first but we will not entertain applications from local coaches. Locally based coaches have been rotating clubs and we want someone with a different outlook. I am not completely ruling out local coaches, but a foreign coach is our ideal target,” said Taolo.

He also ruled out the possibility of Nico reuniting with former coach Elijah Chikwanda, who is also available after he was sacked by BDF XI a fortnight ago. However, Taolo ruled out any chances of Nico approaching the Zambian coach for his services. Another name that has cropped up is that of Wesley Mondo who is rumored to be on his way back to Botswana after parting ways with Kabwe Warriors in Zambia.
