School holiday activities for kids
Keeping Children entertained and out trouble is a challenge especially during school holidays when they have a lot of time on their hands and limited supervision from working parents. Rather than leaving them at home watching television, there are a number of school holidays initiatives that parents can look into, to keep children busy and continue learning and being interactive outside the classroom. The following are a few interesting activities that Time Out discovered that are scheduled for the upcoming holidays to keep the kids engaged to continue with their self-development until the next school term.
Kings Sports have run children’s sport and activity day programmes at Northside Primary School in Gaborone since 2007 during the school holidays. The multi-active programme engages children aged 4 to 17 trying a variety of activities which include arts and crafts, games and core sports by developing and helping them learn key skills, whilst also having fun with friends of a similar age. A range of games forms part of the programme, fun activated games such as parachute, crab football, as well as capture the flag suitable for all the age groups. If your kid is into dancing, a dance class called JUMP is available. Kings Sports runs for a week at P600 per child. Book online at www.kingssports.co.za or call 75440359 for further details.
Bricks 4 Kidz
Bricks 4 Kidz is a mentally stimulating educational program designed for children aged between 3 and 14 to acquire basic skills on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) using LEGO® bricks. The activities are designed to trigger young children’s lively imaginations and build their self-confidence. Though the programme is curriculum based, the holiday schedule emphasizes the fun part. Some of the interesting activities offered through Bricks 4 Kidz include, Robotics, an introduction to computer programming where the kids gets to build robots and programme them to do what they want them them to do; Remote control mania- building remote controlled cars, Arts and crafts, and movie making, where the kids are taught how to make film using stop motion animation. Owner and coordinator of Bricks 4 Kidz, Banyana Segwagwe, describes the activities as enriching to kids as they teach children to think practically and apply themselves both physically and mentally, a far more effective learning experience than schools’ theory based learning. The activities are also suited for children with special needs such as ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and slow brain development, assisting them to gain focus and hone motor skills, gaining confidence through following simple instructions and seeing a task to completion. The Bricks 4 Kidz week long holiday camp starts on the 14th of April, At Northgate Crossing shopping centre in Sebele at a P500 fee per child. Free sessions are available before the 14th. Call Banyana at 72505325 for more details on the activities and enrollment.
