After a 12 year music hiatus, legendary Afro pop group Bongo Maffin will be featured at the upcoming Mascom Live Sessions slated for 9th November at Botswanacraft. Bongo Maffin comprising of members Thandiswa Mazwai, Stoan Seate, Speedy and Jah Seed is currently in the studio making new music and they will herald their return with the release of a new single dubbed Bongo Harare due for release on 2nd November 2018.
“We are very excited. We came to Botswana three years ago still at Botswanacraft but the difference now is that when we come, it will be a week after we drop our new song. Bongo Harare is about the joy of the journey of Bongo Maffin, reflecting our interpretation of how far we have come. The sound is not the same because we have put part of our growth onto the expression but the identity is constant. It won’t be anything that you are used to us doing but you will recognize it’s a Bongo Maffin song,” Stoan told Time Out in an interview adding that it was a new era for the group as they are set to drop their new album in the new year.
Stoan continued to say that patrons should expect an exciting performance, as they have been hard at work rehearsing for the highly anticipated show. “We have got such a long and big discography that we can’t always perform all the songs but we are going to give you about an hour long solid performance. We have been creating music in the past years, other members are successful in their music and now we are coming through as a record label. We have grown as individuals, its almost like we have been away studying to become gurus and we know that we still have it,” he said.
For his part the organizer of the show, Oliver Groth of Botswanacraft said, “The group is currently massive right now and we thought why not bring them for the next session so that everyone can have a good time more so that festive is here. They also have new music that will be released in time for the session and they will also perform their nostalgic hits that everybody loves.”
The Thath’ Isghubu hitmakers made their first performance after smoking the peace pipe last year at the DStv Delicious International Food and Music Festival, a performance that transported their audience down memory lane. They have since featured in prominent festivals around their country of origin, South Africa.
Formed in 1996, Bongo Maffin rose to fame through hit songs Mari YePhepha, The Way kungakhona and Iphendule among others. Their last album titled, “New Construction” was released in 2005 and they released a compilation of their greatest hits titled “Icon” in 2014. A limited number of tickets for the show are priced at P300 available at Botswanacraft
