Auditions to find the next big Electronic Dance Music (EDM) dj will take place next Saturday at Chez Nicolas in Gaborone, returning again on 25th February.
The winner can look forward to pocketing P20 000 and other incentives.
“The DJ’s will perform an 8-10 minutes set to our panel of judges, soon after auditions and satisfied with their top 10, they will be presented to the public where they could now vote for their favorite, the votes will be part of their scores for the top five selection,” said Drew Chadhall who is coordinating the project.
EDM Live Projects, which is behind events such as Chillstep Sundays, and the Pop Up market are spearheading the project. The objective, according to Chadhall, is to expose unknown amateur talent: “Our main focus is amateur and unexposed talent, we love to work with a product from ground – up, doing what we can to help the talent blossom and get ready for the industry”.
Chadhall explained that after selecting the best five contestants, they will put them in a boot camp session where various music mentors, experts and legends will mentor them.
Asked why this was a strictly EDM project, Chadall said “First and foremost, we are an electro inspired and governed movement, we promote the EDM culture through art, music, day events and talent discovery, therefore we focus on all things EDM hence the EDM DJ competition”.
He also expressed confidence that the competition will add value to the local EDM industry as it is fighting hard to grow in the country. The competition was meant to be countrywide, but was hampered by financial constraints. “Unfortunately, we couldn’t handle the logistics budget, so we decided to start it off here first and then spread out in 2018,” explained Chadhall.
The competition’s grand finale is scheduled for April on a date yet to be announced. Interested individuals can collect registration forms at Urban Soul stores.
