Iconic kwaito group coming to Gaborone

Kwaito is timeless! That is the conclusion one can make from the ecstatic responses of revelers to the news that legendary Kwaito outfit Trompies is coming to Gaborone, BotswanaCraft on 25th May.
The gig which is organized by Waar Was Jy Entertainment features local artists Wizards of the Desert and DJ Boogie Sid.
The music show is part of a series of gigs meant to appeal to the older crowd. “While in the past we tried to do ‘festivals’ we got feedback from our clientele that this is not the way ya go ja jeeme. Our clientele wanted a safe, secure venue, shorter lineup and no hassle when it came to drinks and refreshments and we listened,” said the event organizers.
Waar Was Jy Oldies Series debuts its first gig featuring Zynne “Mahoota” Sibika, Mandla “Spikiri” Mofokeng, Eugene “Donald Duck” Mthethwa and Jairus “Jakarumba” Nkwe, music legends who stood the test of time, stuck together and are responsible for generation-defining kwaito hits of the 1990s and 2000s.
With a career spanning over 20 years, Trompies gave us hits like Sweety Lavo and Bengim’ngaka, Madibuseng, Malabulabu and Magasman among others which are responsible for a Kwaito subculture that is mainly embraced by 70s, 80s and 90s babies. The group is particularly credited for making the Pantsula lifestyle popular from the highly energetic narrative dance moves, language and their dress code.
“They popularized Dickies and made you wear Converse. They told you that “Fohloza” was beautiful. They defined the sound of Kalawa and they’re the biggest most iconic group in Kwaito. They are all legends as individuals…” the organizers said.
The Waar Was Jy Oldies Series will be on Fridays and will feature one local dj, one local artist and one international act. The show will start at 7pm and close at midnight. The series will be hosted at Botswana Craft For the foreseeable future. Tickets are P300 and are on sale at Botswana Craft.
