FRANCISTOWN: The case in which Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) Councilor for Moselewapula and Former Francistown Deputy Mayor Lechedzani Modenga is implicated in the illegal sale of Francistown City Council (FCC) land has been postponed to next month due to his ill-health.
Modenga who was recently deposed from his mayoral responsibilities by fellow councilors was supposed to appear before Francistown Magistrate court of Monday. The state alleges that on different dates in April, 2015, in Francistown, he unlawfully and intentionally obtained P45, 000 from Karabo Nkwai on the pretext that as the Deputy Mayor he will use his position to facilitate the allocation of two plots owned by the council. Further, the state alleges that the accused did so while in actual fact he knew that he did not have the powers and authority to facilitate the land sale.
However the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) pleaded with the court to postpone the case to May 26th due to Modenga’s ill-health. “I plead with the court to postpone the matter to give him time to recuperate,” pleaded Mompoloki Gaboephiwe.
Modenga was recently apprehended in Gaborone and detained in connection with the matter.
