DCEC says no evidence while central bank says no money was ever missing

The state has finally been slapped with lawsuits amounting to P105 million by the accused in the high profile case in which former president Ian Khama, former top spy Isaac Kgosi, agent Welheminah ‘Butterfly’ Maswabi and South African businesswoman Bridgette Motsepe-Radebe are accused of jointly stealing 100 billion from the Bank of Botswana.
The foursome wants the staggering amount for reputational damage and insist on a public apology by the government following serious accusations in the case that seems to be losing steam. Both the investigating authority, the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crimes, and custodian of the allegedly stolen money, the Bank of Botswana, have scuppered any chances of success for the prosecution.
The new director at DCEC, Tymon Katlholo, recently said the matter should not have gone to court as there was still no evidence to support the allegations. Maswabi and Motsepe’s suits are registered in Lobatse before Justice Mercy Garekwe and Modiri Letsididi respectively while Kgosi and Khama’s are registered in Gaborone under Godfrey Radijeng and Gabriel Komboni respectively.
