We are studying Kebonang brothers’ judgement – DPP

  • PP says it will have an opinion on the judgement soon
  • Judge said DPP had no evidence

The Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) is scrutinizing the judgment of the National Petroleum Fund (NPF) case that acquitted the Kebonang brothers, Sadique and Zein, to determine the way forward, the Director, Stephen Tiroyakgosi, has said.

A panel of three judges, Christopher Gabanagae, Abednego Tafa and Matlhogonolo Phuthego recently freed the Kebonang broth-ers who were accused and charged, among others, with looting P250 million from the NPF. The judges blasted the DPP for going to court without evidence.

In an interview this week, Tiroyakgosi revealed that they were studying the judgement to determine the way forward. “We have seen the judgement and are still closely studying it to form an opinion,” he said, adding that it was only after studying the judgment that they could map the way forward.

The DPP has come under heavy criticism in recent years for rushing to court with mere suspicions and no evidence, risking costly backlashes on the state in the process.

The Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crimes (DCEC), Tymon Katlholo, recently said the DPP went to court without evidence even in the high profile case in which powerful men and women across two states allegedly stole P100 billion from the Bank of Botswana

In the aftermath of their acquittal, the Kebonang brothers have said they will embark on a path of restoring their reputations.
