Wits are two points ahead of Sundowns with only two games to play before the season elapses

Mogakolodi Ngele could be in line to have the last laugh against his former club Mamelodi Sundowns as his current club Bidvest Wits is closing in on a shock Premier Soccer League (PSL) title triumph. Wits are two points ahead of Sundowns with only two games to play before the season elapses.

Ngele was discarded by Sundowns at the start of the 2016/2017 season after being deemed surplus to requirements and used as a makeweight in a swap deal involving the sale of Sibusiso Vilakazi  from Wits to the Pretoria outfit. The Zebras star has arguably fared better than Vilakazi this season, Ngele has been directly involved in seven goals in the league, scoring three times and providing four assists.

He has scored six goals in total this season as he has enjoyed more first team opportunities as compared to his ill fated Sundowns spell.  In comparison, Vilakazi has endured an injury hit season and has scored only five goals all season long compared to his nine goal tally the previous season. Vilakazi returned from injury last month but he has been on the bench and not involved in the club’s last five games while Ngele has been a key member of his team in the same period.

On paper, it appeared that signing Vilakazi was an upgrade on Ngele but Sundowns could regret offloading the Botswana international if he does eventually help his team to secure the league at the expense of his former club.  Wits’ next game will be a home match against Polokwane City tomorrow (Wednesday).

They will finish the season at the FNB Stadium against Kaizer Chiefs. Wits have a slight psychological edge over Chiefs having beaten them 2-1 in the first round, Chiefs are also winless in four games. Sundowns’ last two games will be against Maritzburg United and relegation threatened Highlands Park respectively.
