Despite his annual pilgrimage to Botswana and his obvious old age, one would expect legendary Zimbabwean artist Oliver ‘Tuku’ Mtukudzi to put on a monotonous performance but the music icon exceeded expectations this past weekend when he delivered another world class act at Botswanacraft. Mtukudzi was headlining the 42nd Mascom Live Sessions and his usual performance in the month of October ushered in the festive season in what has become a tradition in the country’s entertainment calendar.
According to the event organizers Tuku’s shows at Botswanacraft are always sold out and he appreciates that their annual event has always delivered on his expectations and that is why he continues to bless fans with his annual pilgrimage despite his busy tour schedule.
Congolese guitarist, Kapenda Katuta, who is a Botswana resident, did not disappoint with his performance as the supporting act. Katuta who plays distinct DR Congo Rhumba, proved that his act is maturing with time and was a marvel to watch. Alongside a local band he performed fan favourite “ Bravo Papa” and “Malaika” , a song that has been interpreted all over the world.
Tuku, who took to the stage after local guitarist Kapenda Katuta, emerged from backstage strumming his guitar much to the delight of the audience and said, “We missed you a lot and we are happy to be back.” His performance was energetic as he alternated between old and new songs including the crowd’s favourites, “Perekedza” and “Neria” among others.
Mtukudzi’s performance at Botswanacraft was part of his one month African tour that will see him perform in Rwanda, South Africa and Lesotho where he will sample his latest offering, “Hany’nga”. He kick-started his tour in Gaborone on Friday and proceeded to South Africa on Saturday where he performed at the annual Macufe Festival.
The next Mascom Live Session is slated for 9th November and features Bongo Maffin and Motlha. Mascom Live Sessions started in 2011 and Botswanacraft has been producing these live events alongside MI5 and with support from The Gazette and The Voice newspapers, Duma FM and Travelodge.
