Bloemfontein Celtic have completed the signing of Mogogi Gabonamong from Supersport United. The Zebras midfielder has joined the Free State club on an 18-month contract with an option of an additional year.

Gabonamong finalised talks with Celtic last week Friday but the transfer was officially concluded on Monday after he received his transfer clearance from his previous employers.  The midfielder confirmed the deal in an interview with Gazette Sport.

“I am delighted to have signed for Celtic. My aim is to help the side challenge for honours like they have done in recent seasons. I know that my next challenge is to earn a place in the club’s first team and I will work hard to prove my worth. Every new signing always has a point to prove and I will work hard to become a regular first team player,” he stated.
Mogogi’s contract at Supersport would have ended in June but Celtic acted swiftly to sign him ahead of three other clubs. He revealed that he turned down offers from clubs such as Maritzburg United, Polokwane City and Moroka Swallows earlier this month.

“I turned them down because I felt that Celtic would be the best place to test myself and hopefully get more games,” continued the Bloemfontein Celtic signee.

Despite his exit, the 31 -year -old had made glowing remarks about his three-year spell at Supersport United. “United is a fantastic club. The players, management and the coaching staff were all helpful throughout my stay in Pretoria. I have fond memories of my time as a United player. I am grateful for their support and I gave my all for the club. I decided to leave because I needed a fresh challenge and to get a taste of new surroundings,” said Gabonamong.

Gabonamong won his first trophy in South African football with Supersport; he helped the club win the 2012 Nedbank Cup. In total, he made 48 league appearances and scored four goals during his three-year stay.

His other crowning moment at Supersport was last year’s Nedbank Cup final whereby he captained the side during their defeat against Kaizer Chiefs. He also  became the first ever motswana player to captain a Premier Soccer League (PSL) club in a major cup final. He will join his international teammate Joel Mogorosi at the club.
