The Botswana Energy Regulatory Authority (BERA) has announced a new Board of Directors appointed by Minister of Energy and Minerals Bogolo Kenewendo, placing fresh leadership at the centre of the country’s evolving energy regulatory agenda.

In a statement released last Friday, BERA said the newly constituted board will provide strategic leadership to support the authority’s mandate of regulating Botswana’s energy industry through effective licensing, tariff determination, compliance monitoring, enforcement measures and consumer protection initiatives.

The appointments come at a critical time for Botswana’s energy landscape, which is undergoing significant transformation amid efforts to improve energy security, expand renewable energy generation and attract greater private sector participation in power projects.

REGULATORY MANDATE

The regulator said the board’s role will be central to ensuring that BERA continues to deliver on its statutory responsibilities while promoting a transparent, efficient and sustainable energy market.

The new board is expected to guide policy implementation and provide oversight on strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing service delivery and strengthening confidence in Botswana’s energy regulatory framework.

BERA said the newly appointed board brings together a broad mix of expertise spanning governance, energy regulation, economics, engineering, digital transformation and corporate strategy. The board is chaired by Tidimalo Poonyane, a governance and compliance specialist with extensive experience in risk management and legal strategy, while Kesetsenao Molosiwa, an energy regulation and corporate governance expert, will serve as the vice chairperson.

BOARD MIX

Other members include strategic management professional Kelesitse Gilika, economist and business development strategist Nicola Montle Phuthego, policy and economics specialist Zibanani Kahaka, digital transformation expert Mr. Kabo Bothole and engineering and research leader Dr. Sebusang Sebusang. BERA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Never Tshabang will serve as an ex-officio member of the board.

In announcing the appointments, BERA said the collective expertise of the team would strengthen the authority’s ability to regulate the sector effectively and advance its mission of “regulating for energy security,” adding that the board will provide the strategic guidance necessary to deliver efficient licensing, sound tariff-setting, robust compliance enforcement and enhanced consumer protection across Botswana’s evolving energy landscape.

BERA’s announcement signals a renewed commitment to reinforcing institutional governance in the energy space as Botswana pursues broader economic diversification and energy transition objectives.
