After dropping hints of their reunion last year in different social media, multi award winning South African kwaito group Bongo Maffin has finally confirmed their comeback after an eight year break. the quartet; Stoan, Thandiswa, Jah Seed and Speedy will be in Gaborone on the 9th of May at Botswana Craft performing live alongside local sensation A.T.I.
In an interview with South Afica’s Sunday World, Stoan confirmed the reunion “Yes, we are currently recording in studio, strategizing and reuniting as a team. Bongo Maffin as a group never broke up anyway. We have always waited to come back with something more solid. Young Kalawa producers will have a hand in helping BongoMaffin come back with a bang. We have grown but it does not mean we are irrelevant. At Kalawa we have a streamline of talent when it comes to producers who can offer a unique and distinct sound that defines our group. Producers like Badman, Pex Africah, DJ Micks, Mono T and Heavy K as well as Uhuru will be helping us construct our sound.”
The group rose to fame in the 90’s with hit albums, The Concerto, Bongolution, IV and New Construction amongst the successful cluster of BoomShaka, Trompies and Alaska. Since the Thath’isigubhu hit makers reunited they have been hopping from one gig to the other in South Africa quenching reveler’s thirst for their old school jams. Speaking to Oliver Groth of Botswana Craft about the group’s scheduled performance he said, “We are excited to present BongoMaffin who are also happy to be coming here for our next Mascom Live Sessions, they are making a comeback and people are always looking forward to something new and live music when it comes to performances. The group just released a new album, which is something people should look forward to other than the fact that they cannot wait to dance to their old songs.”
According to Groth both artists are going to be amazing and A.T.I who will be representing local talent would as usual be showcasing his creatively unique stage presence.
“A.T.I is known for his creativity, not only in with the way he dresses and sings but his performances are unique and new each time,” he said.
For his part A.T.I said he was looking forward to the show as it will be giving him an opportunity to showcase local talent further revealing that he plans to have a live choir on stage.
“I will be performing live alongside a choir, this is something I have never done before and I promise we are going to be on fire!” he said.
