Kurwana: Volleyball’s most valuable player

Described by his club coach as a disciplined and hard working player, BDF VI receiver Agisanang Kurwana has proved to be a valuable member of his club’s success as well as the national team. Last week the player won two individual awards to round off an impressive year.

He was awarded the Best Male Receiver and the Most Valuable Player accolades at the Mascom Volleyball League Awards. The BDF VI star earned the awards by virtue of being part of the side that finished the league unbeaten; they won the Mascom Volleyball League and the Capital Motors Cup.

His club coach, Selebatso Mabutho told Gazette Sport of the player’s best qualities. “He is a versatile player who can play in any position you assign him. He is probably the only player in the country who can do so,” said the BDF VI coach.
The player’s versatility is proved by the fact that he has won awards in different positions. Last year he won the Best Server award at the Zone 6 Club Championships in Zambia where his side finished in third place.

Mabutho added that, “He is a disciplined player. Agisanang’s attitude towards training is another outstanding feature because he works hard to prove himself every time. He is also a good communicator who is always willing to learn. When he returned from Cuba we already had a setter, Tjiyapo Madeluka, who was doing well in the position so we found an attacking position for him and he has excelled in various roles for the club.”

His coach stated that the player has been vital in their league and cup victories this year. Kurwana has also been successful at international level where he helped Botswana qualify for the second round of the 2014 World Cup Qualifiers. He won the Best Server of the Tournament award during the World Cup Qualifiers to add to his list of individual awards.

Botswana won the Zone 6 World Cup Qualifiers to advance to the next stage where they will tussle with other African sides for a place in the Poland hosted World Cup. His club will begin their quest to win the Zone 6 Club Championships; they have been placed in Pool B in the competition that will be held in Botswana alongside M-Cell (Mozambique), Lomhasha (Swaziland) and Nkwazi (Zambia).
