The National Stadium will host the Mascom Top 8 final next month on April 18th instead of the initially set April 25th date. The heavyweight clash between Gaborone United and Township Rollers will be staged at last year’s cup final venue a week earlier than expected.
A communique from the Botswana Premier League confirmed the news as they revealed that the National Stadium will not be available. As a result, both clubs’ league fixtures on April 18 will also be rescheduled.
Rollers’ match against fellow title hopefuls Orapa United looks set to be postponed as the Top 8 final will take precedence over the league fixtures. The game between Rollers and Orapa is likely to have a say on who finishes the league in the second position as Mochudi Centre Chiefs looks to be within touching distance of winning the league.
GU’s clash against Police XI, also initially billed for April 18 will also be affected by the postponement.
Serowe denied a cup final
Unconfirmed reports reaching Gazette Sport state that Nico United’s failure to reach this season’s Mascom Top 8 final has denied Serowe a chance of hosting the prestigious cup final. Rumours have circulated that the BPL would have explored the possibility of staging the final at the Serowe Sports Complex.
The BPL was reportedly considering a neutral venue for the final if the finalists would have been from opposing regions of the country (North and South). The Serowe based stadium has hosted a match of the Top 8’s calibre earlier this season when Motlakase Power Dynamos hosted Rollers in the quarterfinal stage.
