The sport of boxing is not only about fighting your way to winning a medal, it is also an art form that provides an effective body workout. According to a boxing instructor and promoter, Bond Squealer Ngubula from Bond Boxing Gym in Tlokweng, the tools used for boxing training such as heavy bags, jump ropes, and hook and jab pads provide a fun, interesting and challenging workout that can increase many aspects of fitness with many health benefits.
“Boxing is an aerobic activity that works on one’s co-stability and arms which in turn promotes body fitness. It’s an activity that burns a lot of calories and very effective when it comes to weight loss. On a proper workout one usually loses about 2kg’s in one hour because even the attire one wears during the workout helps a lot with weight loss. In boxing body weight is very important because boxers have to fit in different weight categories for their fights so these workouts help them to maintain or reduce body mass,” Ngubula explained.
Ngubula went on to mention that even though most people focus on losing weight under White Collar Boxing, the sport can also promote weight gain for those who are underweight and need to add more kilos. “Though its rare, we have cases of people who are interested in gaining weight and we welcome them at our club which now has about 40 members. There are routines in place and we monitor their progress,” he said.
He also said that other than the fact that the sport helps with self-defense it also promotes stress relief. According to Bodybuild.com a combination of strength training and aerobic work provides the best of both worlds in terms of feeling a muscular pump and stimulating the cardiovascular system – both of which enhance psychological well-being. After a hard day, hitting the heavy bag for 5-to-6 rounds serves as a tremendous stress release. Boxing enhances the ability to relax, which helps keep the boxer calm and poised under pressure. In this sense, boxing might help one to manage their life more efficiently.
Ngubula also shared that even though they have amateur and professional boxing in their club, he strives to see the trainees competing with other boxers outside the country. “That is why I am also a boxing promoter and we have an upcoming boxing tournament dubbed ‘The Future’ at the end of this month at the Gaborone Main Mall. The tournament will pit Kgomotso ‘Bok Machine’ Bok against Peter Pelane. The main supporting bout will be between Patrick Katura Seoko and Ryan Seakolo and we invite people to come and join us at this event,” he added.
Ngubula is amongst the few boxing promoters and owns the biggest boxing stable in the country. He has a rich background of boxing as he has trained with the likes of Khumiso Ikgopoleng and Master Luza. He is an accredited coach with a few medals under his belt.
