Adventure Awaits At Modipe

What if the next great escape is not across an ocean but across a frost-covered hill? Modipe Frost Adventure is betting that adventure is not something Botswana lacks, only something it has forgotten to look for

GOSEGO MOTSUMI

For years, adventure has been packaged as distance — flights, borders, bucket lists and hashtags. But this winter, Modipe is asking a different question: what if wonder has been sitting in plain sight all along?

From 31 July to 2 August 2026, Modipe Frost Adventure arrives with hiking boots in one hand and folklore in the other at Modipe Hill in Modipane. The three-day outdoor and cultural tourism experience  promises guided hikes, a 4×4 mud challenge, camping, local entertainment, food and a bonfire designed for the kind of conversations that only happen under cold skies.

But beneath the itinerary sits a bigger idea.

“The inspiration came from a simple realization: Botswana is blessed with extraordinary landscapes that remain largely undiscovered,” event organiser Mandla Mogomotsi told Time Out.

THE WEEKEND THAT REFUSES TO RUSH

This is not adventure as performance.

The campsite, positioned just 1.5 kilometres from Modipe Hill, turns movement into immersion. You climb. You camp. You eat. You meet strangers. You become part of the landscape instead of passing through it.

And then there is the mud.

Thanks to Modipe’s black cotton clay soil, the off-road challenge becomes more than entertainment, it becomes proof that nature does not need editing to feel epic.

WHERE FROST MEETS FOLKLORE

What makes Modipe different is not only what happens on the hill, it is what the hill carries. Winter transforms the scenery, but local stories and mythology give the place meaning. Organisers want visitors to leave with more than photos.

“We hope visitors develop a deeper connection with our landscapes, our communities and our shared heritage,” Mogomotsi said.

“If people leave saying, ‘I never knew Botswana had places like this,’ then we will have achieved something meaningful.”

REAL SUCCESS

Mogomotsi says the event’s real success will be local businesses benefiting from increased tourism, young people discovering opportunities in outdoor recreation, visitors respecting and celebrating the cultural heritage of Modipe, and partnerships that continue growing long after the event ends.

“Ultimately, our goal is to build something sustainable, an event that communities are proud to host, businesses are eager to support, and visitors mark on their calendars every winter,” he added.

Day hike access starts at P150 (limited to 100 hikers). Weekend access: P350 (Friday–Sunday).

Saturday gate entry: P100. Kids under 12 enter free.
