He describes the project as an ode to his fans who have stood by him even in times of self-doubt, thus living out the meaning of the adage in its fullness that blood spilled in battle can be more important than one’s family ties. Staff Writer GOSEGO MOTSUMI reports
In a world where the adage “Blood is thicker than water” is often misunderstood, music artist Apollo D redefines its meaning in his latest offering of a 10-track album that borrows the idiom for its title.
The project delves into themes of loyalty, family and personal growth, challenging the conventional view of family as defined solely by blood ties.
For Apollo D, family is also found in the unwavering support of those who have stood by him – his fans. The album, which dropped last Friday, is as much a celebration of them as it is a reflection of his life’s journey.
Fans like family
The album’s title draws from the lesser-known full quote: “The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb.”
Apollo D told Time Out in an interview that the phrase resonates deeply with him, symbolising the loyalty of his fans who have often felt like family more than some of his blood relatives.
“This project is a way of honouring those who have supported me from the beginning of my career,” he said.
A four-year labour of love
Crafted over four years, the album represents a period of healing and transformation for Apollo D. From the COVID-19 pandemic’s crippling impact on the music industry to his own battles with inner demons, the project saw him record nearly 30 songs, narrowing it down to the top-tier 10.
“It was a journey of healing. I had to heal my inner child, unlearn toxic behaviours, and forgive myself,” he noted, adding that his producer, Bangu Matenge, played the dual role of therapist and true friend that helped him channel his emotions into music.
Thoughtful collaborations
The album showcases a dynamic blend of sounds, reflecting Apollo D’s current stage of life. Partnering with producer Bangu, Apollo D aimed to create a mature and relevant body of work.
The collaborations on the album were carefully chosen to enhance its narrative. One standout track, “Grateful,” features award-winning artist Han-C and exemplifies the seamless blend of melody and introspection that defines the album.
“Most of my collaborators were vocalists brought in to add melody, which complements the message,” Apollo explained.
Limited edition merchandise
In addition to the album release, Apollo D has launched limited edition merchandise to commemorate the project. It’s his way of further connecting with the fans who have stood by him through thick and thin.
“To my day one fans, thank you for always believing in me even when I couldn’t believe in myself,” he said, his heartfelt gratitude almost palpable.
