In addition to entertainment, the arts are about economic empowerment, cultural preservation, and inspiring future generations, the Minister of Sports and the Arts, Jacob Kelebeng, has said.
Speaking at the Botswana Musicians Union (BOMU) Awards in Gaborone recently, Kelebeng emphasised the transformative power of the creative industry and the government’s commitment to leveraging the arts as a driver of economic growth and cultural preservation.
“The creative industry is not just about entertainment – it’s about economic empowerment, cultural preservation and inspiring future generations,” he said.
A celebration of talent
Reflecting on the awards night that was held at GICC, the minister praised BOMU for spotlighting artists from even the most remote corners of the country, showcasing the inclusivity and diversity of Botswana’s creative community.
He stated that his highlight of the evening was the posthumous recognition of Gomolemo “Sir G” Motswaledi, who was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his visionary contributions to choral music and the broader music industry.
Vibrant performances
The minister also praised the vibrant performances by celebrated artists like Han C, Morubele, and Chokoma who lit up the evening, saying they reflected the professionalism and passion of Botswana’s artists.
Kelebeng also lauded the production team for delivering a seamless and world-class event, calling it a benchmark for excellence in the industry.
