South African artists Frank Casino and Dj Speedstar will headline the first ever instalment of the Castle Lite Unlocked to be hosted in Botswana.
Castle Lite Unlocked is one of the biggest Hip-Hop events in Africa and has over the years been able to attract a number of high profile US artists such J. Cole, Travis Scott, Bryson Tiller as well as many African heavyweight acts.
Another US rapper, Chance the Rapper, is expected to perform at this year’s event set for 30th April at Johannesburg’s Ticket Pro Dome. In the build up to the festival, Castle Lite will stage an Unlocked event for the very first time in the country early next month (April).
KBL Marketing Manager Kgomotso Garebakwena explained that the Botswana Unlocked edition is a concept aimed at raising awareness and activating local hip hop fans for the main event in SA. “Something that we realized about Chance the Rapper or most US artists is that as much as they are famous, they are unfamiliar with our people. So, we decided that as a build up to the Castle Lite Unlocked in South Africa, we will create a road to the main event,” she told Time Out.
“People are always excited about an international artist, but first we thought that we should start at home. Let us have a South African artist supporting local acts, and then move to see how artists from the US do it. We have also realized that people here in Botswana love Chance the Rapper, and we believe this year’s event will be somewhat different to the one we had last year with Travis Scott and Bryson Tiller,” continued the KBL Head of Marketing.
Veezo View, Dramaboi, Dj Roots and several other local hip hop acts will form part of the Botswana Unlocked edition billed for Molapo Crossing. Tickets selling for P50 at Liquorama stores around the country.
Meanwhile, KBL has also revealed 50 lucky winners who the company, through various promotional competitions, managed to give a chance to attend the main event in South Africa.
