Botswana has lost one of its finest musical storytellers. Guitarist, singer and cultural visionary Kabo Leburu leaves behind a timeless catalogue of music and a legacy of nurturing African creativity that will continue to inspire generations
GOSEGO MOTSUMI
Botswana’s music fraternity is mourning the loss of acclaimed Afro-jazz guitarist, singer and songwriter Kabo Leburu, who passed away on 9 July 2026, bringing to a close an extraordinary career defined by artistry, humility and an unwavering commitment to African music.
A SOUND UNIQUELY HIS OWN
Born in Lobatse, Leburu established himself as one of Botswana’s most respected Afro-jazz and world music musicians. His distinctive sound fused indigenous African rhythms, contemporary jazz and intricate fingerpicking guitar techniques into a style that was both authentic and instantly recognisable. A self-taught multi-instrumentalist, he earned admiration not only for his musicianship but also for his ability to bridge cultures through music.
FROM LOBATSE TO THE WORLD
Leburu first rose to prominence as guitarist and co-founder of Dance Afrika, before collaborating with renowned African musicians including Louis Mhlanga, Regis Gizavo, Berry Heart, Shanti and John Selolwane. His work earned him recognition locally and internationally, cementing his place among Botswana’s most influential contemporary musicians.
His songs, including Mmapaseka, Sejaro and Kedi Kaba, became staples of Botswana’s Afro-jazz landscape, reflecting his deep appreciation for tradition while embracing modern musical influences. In 2024, he expanded that vision through an international collaboration with celebrated Chilean musician Alejandro Vega on Kedi Kaba, a vibrant fusion of Afro-jazz and Latin rhythms that celebrated cultural exchange across continents.
A CHAMPION OF AFRICAN CREATIVITY
Beyond the stage, Leburu was a passionate advocate for the creative industry. As one of the founding members of JAAM Fest, he helped establish a platform dedicated to showcasing African artists and creating opportunities for collaboration, growth and cultural expression. Friends and colleagues remember him as a generous mentor whose belief in African creativity extended far beyond his own performances.
A LEGACY THAT WILL ENDURE
While Botswana has lost one of its most gifted musicians, Kabo Leburu Wa-Katara’s legacy will continue to resonate through the melodies he created, the artists he inspired and the cultural foundations he helped build. His music remains a lasting reminder that true artistry never fades, it lives on in the hearts of those it touched.
