After performing at a sold-out show in Nairobi, Kenya at the end of last year, local Afro-house duo Roy ‘Roy K’ Kasale and Aaron Motlhabani of Team Distant are gearing up for a gig in Europe that is set to export Botswana music to the world.

This comes hot on the heels of their new international hit single, “Out of Time,” featuring DJ 4Rain, Lioness Ratang and Pricilla K.

“Europe is our next destination, starting with London,” producer and drummer Roy K told Time Out in an interview. “Details of the gig will be communicated in the coming months. “We have been travelling the world exporting our music.

Compete globally
“This is what we have been dreaming of for a long time. When we changed our sound, we wanted to compete globally. Playing international gigs is really staying true to our vision and mission. We are driven by our passion to be competitive globally and to achieve a lot beyond our borders.”

Out of Time
Their latest release, “Out of Time,” is currently on multiple digital billboards in Miami, Florida in the USA. According to Roy K, the new song talks about a person being in a dark place and running out of time as the curtain falls on them.

“The song being on international billboards is thanks to the ANR Record Label pushing it because they have access to all the platforms that you will see us appearing on, including the billboards,” he said.

The collaboration
The artist’s collaboration was as a result of DJ 4Rain identifying and loving the duo’s music for a song he was planning to release.

Team Distant had already recorded with Pricilla K and Lioness Ratang and the song was handed over to DJ 4Rain who came up with the heavy marketing and everything that is involved in taking the song to the international market.

“They have barely started on the marketing yet, but so far so good,” Roy K added. “What this really means for us is that we are staying true to our vision of being a global representation of Botswana’s music.”

Group background
In May last year, Team Distant have dropped a hit Extended Play (EP) dubbed “Sesa Remix” which featured a few international artists. The group started as a quartet back in 2013 but it is now left with Roy K, who is a drummer and a producer, and Motlhabani, who is a deejay and a producer.

So far, the two have produced songs such as “Umoya” and “Moonlight” featuring Dr Malinga and Native Flute Song (Original).
