Star of the Oscar-winning film Tsotsi, Zenzo Ngqobe, has joined the cast of the upcoming high-profile short film styled “Partly Cloudy & Hot” (PCH) starring international model Kaone Kario who plays the character of Sara.
Ngqobe, who is South African, is the only actor in the film who is not from Botswana and plays the male lead of KB, who is Sara’s husband and a young pastor navigating a new marriage in Gaborone.
“Ngqobe was in Botswana these past holidays to film his scenes with Kario,” said the film’s executive producer, Donald Molosi.
“Zenzo and I began talks on the film a year ago when I was in London. At that time, Kaone was already attached to the project. Zenzo is one of the finest African actors of my generation and what he and Kaone create together in PCH is powerful and timely.”
Award winning Gabang
Moreetsi Gabang has also been announced as Director of the film. He was previously nominated for the AMAA (African Oscars) in 2018 for his film called Motswakwa and is the only Motswana filmmaker in history to garner this coveted nomination.
Kario as Sara
Another star of the film, Kaone Kario, shot to fame when she won the Nokia Face of Africa in 2005. She went on to have an international career as a model based between New York City and Cape Town for the past two decades. She is a native of Maun and PCH will be her first film as a lead actress.
Speaking for the first time since the film was announced, Kario praised Molosi’s writing and says the script moved her.
“My time filming PCH set me up for exploring personal freedom because of how the story was written,” she said. “Being Sara was freeing for me. I loved playing Sara. She is a fighter and a rule-breaker, even in the midst of marital difficulties.”
The international model admitted that she was unwell during filming but found a way to channel that into Sara. “I shot PCH in the throes of headaches and a swollen body,” she recalled. “My challenge was being in a body that wasn’t functioning with the ease I was so used to.”
Partly Cloudy & Hot
“Partly Cloudy & Hot” is the story of a young, good-looking couple and the spell-binding way they go about starting a family. It was written and executive-produced by Molosi. The short film will be released later this year by CattlePost Films.
