The call for the resignation of the entire Central Committee (CC) of the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) is an emotive call and lacks practicality, the Secretary General of the party, Kavis Kario, has said.
In an interview with The Botswana Gazette after a heated meeting of the Francistown region of the BDP over the weekend that called for the resignation of the CC, Kario said resigning would paralyse operations of the party.
“We acknowledge the venting out and the call made by some members of the region,” he said. “However, this is an emotive call that is impractical.
Administrative
“The role of the committee is administrative. Therefore, if the entire committee resigns, what will happen to operations of the party? You cannot call for the entire committee to resign.
“They are right to make this call but we have to be realistic in the way we call for action. How we move forward is how democrats should be proposing.
“We went through a difficult time of losing power and take responsibility as a collective. I personally apologise unreservedly and do not mind resigning, but not the entire committee.”
Kario led the CC to address a consultative meeting of the Francistown region of the BDP over the weekend where the democrats called for the resignation of party’s entire committee, including former president Mokgweetsi Masisi.
Fresh ideas
The region accused the CC of failing the party, saying it must make for fresh ideas that could revive the party and prepare it for the next general elections.
Addressing the media about the BDP’s loss of power recently, Masisi vowed to remain in the party leadership until the next congress.
He said he took responsibility for the loss as the party leader and therefore will remain in his position to steer the party in the right direction.
