BDP Pushes For Full-Time SG

  • Resolution aims to enhance efficiency by ensuring undivided attention

Members of the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) are advocating for the implementation of a long-standing resolution on appointing a full-time Secretary General (SG).

This move, originally adopted at the party’s last National Council, seeks to enhance operational efficiency at Tsholetsa House.

Members of the BDP believe that the poor performance of their party in the 2024 general elections could have been mitigated if the resolution had been implemented earlier.

Building party structures

They hold that an elected SG often divides attention between party responsibilities and personal political ambitions, thus compromising efficiency of the office.

A full-time SG, on the other hand would focus exclusively on building party structures, forging relationships with stakeholders, and strengthening ties with fraternal allies.

As head of the secretariat, the SG would work closely with the executive secretary to ensure the party’s growth and stability.

Several key events

With the BDP set to hold several key events this year – including the National Council, elective congresses of the youth and women’s wings, and the main elective congress to choose a new Central Committee – the resolution is expected to take centre stage.

Sources say once implemented, the SG role should come with a lucrative package, comparable to that of a permanent secretary in the central government.

This should include transport and housing allowances, thus ensuring that the position attracts a dedicated professional who can focus entirely on the party’s day-to-day operations without conflicting interests, such as running for political office.

Secretary General Lemogang Kwape was unavailable for comment at the time of going to press.
