DPP Orders Tshepi Inquest

The Directorate of Public Prosecutions has concluded its preliminary investigations into the death of 13 year old Retshepile “Tshepi” Tshedu and has ordered that the matter proceed to a formal inquest before a magistrate to establish whether there is a prima facie case for possible accountability.

The case stems from the tragic death of the minor, which later sparked the “Justice for Tshepi” movement, drawing public attention and calls for answers over the circumstances surrounding her death.

PUBLIC PROCESS

Updating the nation on the matter, Minister of State President Moeti Mohwasa said the DPP decision effectively moves the case into a public judicial process aimed at establishing the circumstances surrounding the death and whether any individual or institution may bear legal responsibility.

He said the inquest will be held in open court, allowing members of the public to attend proceedings.

Individuals with relevant information or evidence have been urged to come forward and assist the court in reconstructing events and clarifying key aspects of the case. The magistrate led inquiry is expected to examine all available evidence, including expert findings and any other material that may assist in determining what led to Tshepi’s death.

PUBLIC RESTRAINT

Meanwhile, the minister has called for restraint, urging the public to respect due legal process and avoid speculation that could interfere with the proceedings or cause further distress to the bereaved family.

He reiterated government’s commitment to protecting children’s rights, adding that the State has a duty to ensure that any gaps in care, oversight or protection are properly investigated and addressed.
