Five Vie For Domkrag Presidency

GAZETTE REPORTER

The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) is gearing up for its national elective congress that is slated for July 19–22 in Maun.

Five candidates have so far declared their intention to succeed former president Mokgweetsi Masisi as the leader of the party.

Although the BDP has not officially released a list of candidates, The Botswana Gazette has confirmed that Slumber Tsogwane, Mpho Balopi, Ame Makoba, Dorcas Makgato, and Nonofo Molefhi are vying for the presidency.

Reluctant

Balopi, Makoba, and Tsogwane have already declared their candidacies publicly. Balopi appears to have gained significant traction, with reports indicating strong support from multiple regions.

Said a source at Tsholetsa House: “He has been engaging extensively with regions, and many are confident in his ability to lead the party into the 2029 general elections.”

However, challenges persist. Some party members suspect that Masisi is reluctant to relinquish his influence and that he may promote a preferred successor.

Ignored

Calls from regional leaders for Masisi and his Central Committee (CC) to step aside following the shocking 2024 election loss have been ignored.

It is alleged that Masisi has held numerous private meetings with party structures to advocate for his preferences.

While he has yet to officially endorse a candidate, his remarks about the need for a youthful leader have fuelled speculation that he could back Makoba.

Observers warn that the upcoming congress could be a turning point for the BDP. Analysts believe that too many competing lobby lists could exacerbate internal divisions.

Factions

“Excessive lobbying will heighten tensions and risk creating factions, undermining efforts to rebuild the party,” one commented.

Attempts to get an official comment from the party proved futile as Secretary General Lemogang Kwape’s line rang unanswered yesterday (Tuesday).
