The Botswana Boxing Association (BoBA) awards will return this weekend after the association failed to host the annual event last year due to lack of sponsorship and funds. BoBA awards, winch are meant to recognize and honour top boxers, coaches, referees as well as clubs have been running for the last eight years (minus last year).
The awards are one of the biggest in local sports. Boxing is also one of the few sporting codes in the country that stage such events to honour their stakeholders. This year’s awards will be hosted on Saturday night in Gaborone and have been sponsored by diamond mining company Debswana at a tune of P150 000.
Eight awards will be handed out on the night ranging from Best Young Male & Female, Best Boxer, Best Coach, Best Referee, Best Judge, Administrator of the year, as well as Best Affiliate. 2014 Africa Youth Games Gold Medalist Rajad Mohammed (52KG) has been nominated for best boxer of the year alongside Mmoloki Thipe (60KG) of Prisons club and Mafika George Molwantwa (56KG).
Aratwa Kesemang (60KG), and Keamogetse Kenosi (57KG) who represented the country at the Commonwealth Games in GoldCoast will do battle for best female boxer of the year. Gorata Morwe (57KG) from Gantsi has also been nominated in the same category. National team coach Lechedzani ‘Master’ Luza of Tsholofelo club, Dinners Sikele (BMC) and Phuthego Sakhu from Gantsi will contest for the best coach of the year.
BoBa Public Relations Officer (PRO) Taolo Tlouetsile says there are several new developments in this year’s awards such as President’s Award. He further pointed that there was also a decline in the sponsorship from Debswana. The awards in 2016 were financed at value of P224 500. Tickets for the event are selling at P3000 per table and P300 per person at BoBA offices. The awards will be hosted at Fairgrounds Holdings. Below is a full list of the nominees. 2018 Debswana Boxing
