Botswana Grand Prix Regains Gold Status

The meeting returns to the World Athletics Continental Tour’s Gold category for 2027 after administrative failures cost it the classification.

BONGANI MALUNGA

The Botswana Golden Grand Prix has regained Gold status on the World Athletics Continental Tour for 2027. The Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) confirmed the classification last week, with the meeting scheduled for 24 April 2027 at Gaborone’s National Stadium.

STATUS RESTORED

The competition was relegated to Silver for the 2026 season after organisers failed to meet World Athletics administrative deadlines following the 2025 edition. Its return restores a classification that helps support its international profile and appeal to elite competitors.

Since its establishment in 2023, the meeting has attracted prominent international athletes, including Americans Sha’Carri Richardson and Kenny Bednarek, Canada’s Andre De Grasse and Kenya’s African 100m record holder Ferdinand Omanyala. All four competed at the inaugural edition, helping establish the event’s reputation for elite sprinting.

MEMORABLE PERFORMANCES

The 2025 edition saw Botswana’s Olympic 200m champion Letsile Tebogo win over his signature distance in front of home supporters. South Africa’s Akani Simbine won the men’s 100m in 9.90 seconds, while American Olympic champion Dalilah Muhammad took the women’s 400m hurdles title.

The meeting retained international appeal in 2026 despite its Silver classification. American Olympic champion Gabby Thomas won the women’s 100m, with De Grasse and Omanyala also among the athletes attending.

INTERNATIONAL OPPORTUNITY

Regaining Gold status could improve the Grand Prix’s ability to attract elite competitors, commercial partners and international exposure. It also gives local athletes an opportunity to compete against leading opposition at home while pursuing performances and international ranking points.

The BAA also announced that Botswana will host the second stop and first Gold level meeting of the newly established African Athletics Tour. The announcement adds another dimension to Gaborone’s place on the continental athletics calendar.

ORGANISATIONAL TEST

Attention now turns to the field organisers can assemble for the confirmed 2027 edition. Maintaining the restored classification will also require avoiding the administrative shortcomings that cost the competition its Gold status.
