Chess,Tennis Stars Head to US for Academic and Athletic Excellence

Woman Candidate Master (WCM) Refilwe Gabatshwarwe and tennis standout Mark Nawa are embarking on transformative journeys to the United States where they will combine studies and sports.

 

Affectionately known as “Tsutsu,” Gabatshwarwe has joined Texas Tech University where she will pursue a dual Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Computer Science.

 

Accomplished 

 

The accomplished chess player’s resume speaks volumes about her potential. In 2024 alone, she secured a bronze medal at the Metropolitan National Chess Championships, a silver medal at the National Team Trials, a gold medal at the Botho University & Tertiary Chess Championships, and another silver at the National Team Selection Finals.

 

Gabatshwarwe’s academic aspirations align with her ambition to advance her chess career on the international stage.

 

Meanwhile, Nawa is set to begin his collegiate tennis journey at Auburn University at Montgomery this Friday, supported by a prestigious four-year athletic scholarship. His selection follows an impressive streak of performances that solidified his reputation as one of Botswana’s finest tennis talents.

 

Growing opportunities 

 

Nawa joins the ranks of other Botswana athletes who have trained at the university, including former Zebras player Masego Ntshingane.

 

Both athletes’ transitions to the US reflect the growing opportunities for Botswana’s sporting talent to thrive internationally.
