Botswana will host the 2026 African Individual Chess Championships for the first time, a development that Botswana Chess Federation (BCF) president Kutlwano Tatolo described as a landmark moment for the country and the sport.

The championship, Africa’s premier individual chess competition, will take place at Debswana Jwaneng Mine from June 18 to June 27, 2026. The tournament also serves as a qualification event for the FIDE Chess World Cup, attracting some of the continent’s strongest players.

“The championship elevates Botswana’s profile on the continental and international sporting stage, showcases the country’s ability to host world-class events, and provides local players with the unique opportunity to compete against Africa’s strongest chess talent on home soil,” Tatolo said in an interview.

She added that the event is expected to promote tourism and economic activity while contributing to the development of chess in Botswana.

Strong Field

According to Tatolo, 25 African countries have confirmed participation in the championship.

“We are delighted to confirm participation from 25 African countries, including three Grandmasters and more than ten International Masters, alongside numerous titled players and rising talents who represent the future of African chess,” she said.

“Their presence reflects the growing strength and popularity of chess across the continent and underscores the importance of this championship within the global chess calendar.”

The event is recognised as the continent’s most important chess tournament and offers players an opportunity to secure qualification to the Chess World Cup.

Golden Jubilee

This year’s championship coincides with the 50th anniversary of the African Chess Confederation (ACC), adding further significance to the tournament.

“Importantly, the championship coincides with the 50th Anniversary of the African Chess Confederation, making Botswana the proud host of a landmark celebration in African chess history,” Tatolo said.

She said hosting the tournament demonstrates Botswana’s growing reputation as a destination capable of staging major sporting events while providing an opportunity to showcase the country’s hospitality, culture and tourism offerings.

Tatolo also acknowledged the contribution of partners and stakeholders involved in delivering the event.

“On behalf of the Botswana Chess Federation, I wish to express our sincere gratitude to Debswana Jwaneng Mine, our sponsors, partners, volunteers, government stakeholders, and the African Chess Confederation for their unwavering support in making this historic event possible,” she said.
