GU, Galaxy Renew Battle For Supremacy

Modern giants collide as GU’s league momentum meets Galaxy’s superior knockout record with an African Hero Top 8 final beckoning

BONGANI MALUNGA

Gaborone United and Jwaneng Galaxy will renew arguably the defining rivalry of Botswana football’s modern era on Saturday when the country’s two most decorated teams of the past eight years collide in the African Hero Top 8 semi-finals at the National Stadium.

The 8.30pm heavyweight encounter pits the reigning FNB Premiership champions against the reigning Orange FA Cup champions, with another major trophy now within touching distance for two clubs that have increasingly divided domestic honours between themselves.

Since 2019, Galaxy and GU have collected 13 major domestic trophies between them, illustrating just how decisively the balance of power has shifted towards the two clubs.

Galaxy hold a narrow edge with seven major trophies during the period. Their collection includes the 2019 Mascom Top 8, Premier League titles in 2020, 2023 and 2024, before completing an Orange FA Cup three-peat between 2024 and 2026. Their 2024 campaign produced a league and cup double.

GU are only one trophy behind with six. The Money Machine captured three successive Orange FA Cups in 2020, 2022 and 2023, while adding league crowns in 2022, 2025 and 2026. Their latest championship saw them finish the 2025/26 campaign on 74 points, 15 ahead of second-placed Galaxy.

GALAXY HOLD CUP EDGE

However, Saturday’s knockout setting brings an intriguing twist. Galaxy have historically enjoyed the better of their major cup clashes with GU, advancing or winning three of their previous four knockout ties.

Their first major cup showdown came in the 2019 Mascom Top 8 final, where Galaxy defeated GU 2-0 in Francistown to lift the trophy. Later that year, Galaxy again eliminated the Reds from the following Top 8 edition, winning 4-3 on penalties after their two-legged quarter-final finished 1-1 on aggregate.

GU finally turned the tables in emphatic fashion in the 2021 Orange FA Cup semi-final, beating Galaxy 3-0 through goals from Mpho Kgaswane, Kekaetswe Moloi and Thatayaone Kgamanyane.

However, Galaxy reclaimed their knockout bragging rights only months ago as they eliminated GU 1-0 in the 2026 Orange FA Cup semi-final before going on to defeat Mochudi Centre Chiefs 2-1 in the final and complete a third consecutive FA Cup triumph.

GU CARRY LEAGUE MOMENTUM

GU will nevertheless enter Saturday’s rematch with the psychological boost of having beaten Galaxy 2-1 at Galaxy Stadium last Saturday, exactly a week before their Top 8 showdown. That victory continued GU’s recent league stranglehold over the Jwaneng side. They also beat Galaxy 1-0 in Jwaneng in February and famously defeated them 4-2 in May 2025 in the match that effectively delivered the league championship.

Saturday therefore offers a compelling collision of trends, GU’s growing command of the league rivalry against Galaxy’s superior record when elimination football is involved. Before the giants settle their score, Mochudi Centre Chiefs and Sua Flamingoes will contest the opening semi-final at 5pm.

But come 8.30pm, the National Stadium spotlight will fall firmly on the two clubs that have dominated Botswana football’s trophy cabinet for much of the last eight years, with only one of them able to move within 90 minutes of adding another piece of silverware.
