Mpho Kgaswane’s stay in Europe is in doubt as his team Zira FC is yet to offer him a new contract.
The Zebras winger’s contract with the team expires at the end of June, he signed a six month contract with them after partying ways with Baroka FC (South Africa) in January. Kgaswane have enjoyed a successful stint with the team since joining them from the ABSA premiership, he has scored four goals and provided a single assist in 11 league appearances. The Mmankgodi born player has however failed to score or provide an assist in his two appearances of the Azerbaijan Cup.
“ Im still not sure if I am continuing with them as they are yet to offer me a new contract, but I am hopeful they will do so soon,” said Kgaswane in a telephone interview with Gazette Sport from Azerbaijan. “ I believe I have impressed in such a way that other teams have also seen my ability.”
Zira FC finished fifth in the Azerbaijain Premier League with 31 points from 28 encounters, the league is made up of eight teams. The team also failed to qualify for the Azerbaijan Cup Final after being knocked out by Sumqayit FC with a 3-3 aggregate scoreline ultimately denting Kgaswane’s hopes of making history by being the first Motswana to play in the Europa League. This is because the Azerbaijan Cup is used as a qualifier for the tournament.
“ I can say I’m happy with my stay with the team thus far even though we finished fifth in the league and failed to progress to the cup final,” the 24 year old player noted. “I am happy in the sense that I have learnt a lot of things that can be useful for me going forward because in football you always learn new things everyday. I believe I have also improved in my offense something which I believe can be useful in the national team going foward.”
