FC Baroka striker Onkabetse Makgantai scored his first ABSA Premiership goal this past weekend in his team’s 2-1 defeat against Orlando Pirates. Makgantai entered the game as a second half substitute and he made an instant impact in the match.
Pirates had commanded a 2-0 lead in the first half, Makgantai scored a well taken goal from a corner kick, he was unmarked and pounced on his teammate’s cross and side footed the ball into the back of the net.
Although Makgantai’s strike was a consolation the goal could prove to be his launching pad, it could serve as a turning point to finally see him given a chance as a starter, he has been an impact player in his first three games for the club, he is yet to start a league game.
Baroka’s attacking department was misfiring on the day but Makgantai took his chance well and demonstrated that he could offer them something different in terms of their striking options. The defeat leaves Baroka 14th on the log after seven rounds of league action, Makgantai’s international teammate Mpho Kgaswane was in the starting line up.
Baroka will get a chance to recover from their weekend setback on Wednesday against Free State Stars at home, Makgantai will be hoping to finally get a place in the starting line up.
Makgantai has now joined an elite list of Botswana players who have scored against one of Africa’s biggest clubs, Pirates. The likes of Diphetogo Selolwane, Jerome Ramatlhakwana, Joel Mogorosi, Mogogi Gabonamong and Mogakolodi Ngele have previously found the net against the Soweto giants.
