Metropolitan Botswana has once again extended its partnership with Botswana Chess Federation (BCF), this time by sponsoring the national chess championship tournament to the tune of P152,800.

“We feel honoured for the continued support that is being given by Metropolitan to us,” said Goitsemodimo Makgatle, spokesperson for BCF, in a brief telephone interview with Gazette Sports following the commencement of the Metropolitan National Chess Championships over the weekend.

She highlighted the enduring nature of their relationship that goes back 17 years. “Despite the economic crunch, Metropolitan continues to ensure that they sponsor without fail us every year,” she added.

Makgatle emphasised the profound impact of Metropolitan’s consistent support on development of chess in Botswana.

“Their generosity is truly inspiring and we are so thankful for all that they do,” she said. “The support of Metropolitan has made a real difference in our chess development in the country.”

The Metropolitan National Chess Championships commenced over the weekend with the first round witnessing the participation of 23 players in the open section and 17 in the women’s section.

These skilled contenders demonstrated their strategic prowess, vying for victory and advancement to the next round.

As the competition progresses, anticipation builds for the next round scheduled for the end of this month when the top performers will continue to showcase their talent and dedication to chess.
