The Botswana Taekwondo Federation says more than 30 athletes have already confirmed participation in the upcoming 6 Series Championship, with additional entries expected before competition day.

“So far we have over 30 athletes and more to follow…” said the federation spokesperson Boleng Sedimo in a telephone interview ahead of the event scheduled for June 27 at Sir Seretse Khama Memorial School.

Sedimo noted that the championship is expected to feature strong participation from multiple clubs, setting the stage for a competitive field.

Selection Pathway

The 6 Series Championship is structured as a six-month-long competition held every last Saturday of the month, designed to contextualise rankings and strengthen the national selection process.

“The 6 Series Championship is most vital and plays a role in National Selection. Podium finish qualifies athletes to the upcoming regional youth games in Mozambique. Ultimately the top ranked athletes will qualify for national selection,” Sedimo said.

He added that one of the core objectives is to identify key athletes for national selection while also promoting Taekwondo development and supporting fundraising activities for federation programmes.

“The main objectives for the 6 Series is to identify key athletes for national selection and as well promote fund-raising activities for our federation activities and promote Taekwondo as a whole.”

Regional Expansion

The federation has also extended invitations to several countries within the region, as part of efforts to elevate the competitive standard and broaden participation.

“Since the event is high level we also extended an invitation to several countries in our region and the President cup which will take place on October 25th, which will be our regional Event,” Sedimo said.

He further described the championship as a platform where high-level competition between clubs will be evident, with athletes competing for ranking points and selection consideration.

“The competition will be high level from various clubs will be clinching,” he said.
