Playing a high-intensity game of total football and loud crowd support should win the crucial game for Botswana at the Zebras’ killing fields of Obed Itani Chilume Stadium in Francistown on Friday

The Zebras are gearing up for a high-stakes encounter against Mauritania at the Obed Itani Chilume Stadium in Francistown this Friday.

Scheduled for a 3pm kickoff, the game will determine whether the Zebras secure their place in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

With the hopes of the nation riding on this match, a victory would seal Botswana’s qualification, marking a significant achievement for Botswana’s national football team.

Final hurdle

The Zebras have shown promise throughout the qualification stages but Friday’s match is their final hurdle.

Football analyst Tshepo Molwane believes that success in this game will depend on tactical discipline, mental resilience, and an all-out effort from both players and coaching staff. “Botswana has a strong chance to win if they play to their strength,” he said in a telephone interview.

“The team’s defensive organisation has been solid recently, but they will need to be particularly alert against Mauritania’s counter-attacks. Mauritania has quick forwards who exploit gaps, so the Zebras must maintain a tight backline.”

Clinical in front of goal

But defending effectively will only be half the battle for Botswana. Molwane emphasised that the team must balance defensive caution with offensive ambition, especially when in possession.

“It’s not enough to sit back and defend for 90 minutes,” he noted. “They must take the game to Mauritania, create scoring chances and capitalise on them. Our midfielders need to support the attack effectively and our forwards must stay clinical in front of goal.”

One of the key challenges for the Zebras will be controlling the tempo and finding ways to break down Mauritania’s defensive setup. According to Molwane this calls for a high-intensity game, using home advantage and crowd support to pressurise Mauritania from the outset.

Massive home advantage

“Playing at home in Francistown is a massive advantage for the Zebras,” he said. “The fans will have to get behind the team and create an atmosphere that unsettles the Mauritanians.”

Molwane also highlighted the importance of the team’s mental preparation. “The players must approach this game with calm focus,” he urged.

“They should remember that this is the culmination of months of hard work but must not let the pressure affect their game.

“Mauritania will come in with experience and will likely be strategic in slowing down the play. The Zebras must stay composed and execute their game plan.”
