UPICtv, Botswana’s first subscription-based Video on Demand (SVoD) platform, was the main sponsor for the Creative Business Luncheon with South Africa-based Motswana businesswoman and actress Connie Ferguson.

Held over the weekend at Phakalane Golf Estate in Gaborone, the luncheon brought the local creative industry under one roof to offer a mentorship opportunity with the accomplished actor and creative industry entrepreneur.

“UPICtv is proud to be associated with the Creative Business Luncheon and the impact that it will have on creatives in Botswana,” said UPIC’s Public Relations and Marketing Communication Manager, Keleabetswe Loeto, in a statement. “The brand is committed to continue offering opportunities to local creators to develop and excel to international standards.”

One of the highlights of the luncheon was the award-winning actress sharing that the world is currently looking to Africa to tell its authentic stories. As is the case with Nigeria that is currently running a multimillion film industry, Ferguson said Botswana is representing Africa well on the global scale but emphasised that even with its small population, the need for the country to tell its stories to the world remains important.
UPICtv is a product of Botswana Fibre Networks (BoFiNet) and was launched in October 2020 to empower and commercialise Botswana’s storytellers. The platform offers local content producers and actors an opportunity to showcase their work to large audiences locally and internationally, thereby creating exposure for local talent worldwide.

Said Loeto: “To-date the UPICtv platform is made up of 60% local content and aggregates local radio and TV stations. UPICtv stands to be one of the key drivers of Botswana’s digital transformation strategy and a strategic partner in driving the creative economy strategy and job creation, especially among the youth.”
