The UK has announced that nationals from Botswana applying for Student and Child Student visas will no longer be required to submit bank statements or other financial documents at the initial application stage

Botswana students planning to pursue studies in the United Kingdom (UK) have received a major boost after British authorities relaxed financial evidence requirements for student visa applications, placing Botswana among only three African countries to benefit from the exemption.
The UK Home Office updated its immigration guidance on Monday, July 27, 2026, announcing that nationals from Botswana, Mauritius and Tunisia applying for Student and Child Student visas will no longer be required to submit bank statements or other financial documents at the initial application stage.
SIMPLIFYING THE VISA PROCESS
The change is expected to simplify the visa process for Botswana students, although UK authorities stressed that the exemption does not remove the requirement for applicants to have sufficient funds to cover tuition, accommodation and living expenses while in the UK.
Under the revised rules, applicants must still be able to prove they meet the financial requirements if requested by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) during the assessment process. Failure to provide the required evidence when asked could result in visa refusal.
FINANCIAL REQUIREMENTS REMAIN
While the upfront document requirement has been removed, the financial thresholds for international students remain unchanged.
Students studying outside London must demonstrate access to £1,171 per month for up to nine months, while those studying in London must show £1,529 per month for the same period.
Applicants travelling with dependants are subject to additional financial requirements, including £680 per month outside London and £845 per month in London for up to nine months.
Accepted sources of funding include government-backed student loans, official sponsorships, personal savings, and financial support from parents or eligible partners.
The exemption places Botswana in a select group of African countries receiving preferential treatment under the new UKVI arrangements. Out of Africa’s 54 countries, only Botswana, Mauritius and Tunisia have been removed from the list requiring financial evidence upfront.
SHIFT AFTER VISA RESTRICTIONS
The development comes months after the UK introduced stricter travel controls for Botswana nationals, ending visa-free entry and removing Botswana from the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme in October 2025.
Britain introduced the visa requirement following a rise in asylum applications from Botswana citizens. Between January 2022 and June 2025, UK authorities recorded 1,332 asylum claims from Botswana nationals, including 329 applications in the year ending June 2025.
The Home Office said the increase placed additional pressure on border systems, with many claims being made after arrival without prior screening.
The UK remains one of the most popular destinations for Botswana students, with universities attracting applicants seeking internationally recognised qualifications, research opportunities and professional networks.
