Bona Life has reaffirmed its commitment to Botswana sport and community development through its continued sponsorship of the 2026 Betway Clash of Legends, which takes place over the weekend at the National Stadium.

The citizen-owned life insurer returns as a key partner of the event after serving as title sponsor in 2025, a move organisers say reflects growing confidence in the tournament’s impact and long-term potential.

This weekend’s event will bring together former football stars from Township Rollers, Mochudi Centre Chiefs, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in a celebration of football heritage, nostalgia and community pride.

For Bona Life Chief Executive Officer Phatsimo Keakabetse, the sponsorship reflects the company’s wider mission of empowering communities while protecting futures.

“Clash of Legends aligns strongly with Bona Life’s purpose of protecting futures and empowering communities,” said Keakabetse. “The event celebrates resilience, discipline, teamwork and excellence; values that are fundamental both in sport and in life.”

She said the insurer’s involvement goes beyond sponsorship visibility, focusing instead on long-term social impact and community upliftment.

“As Botswana’s citizen-owned life insurer, we believe that investing in people extends beyond financial protection. It includes supporting initiatives that inspire individuals, strengthen communities and promote healthy, active lifestyles,” she said.

Keakabetse added that the event plays an important role in promoting social cohesion by bringing people together around sport.

“Through our support of Clash of Legends, we honour sporting excellence while contributing to social cohesion and community development, creating opportunities for people to come together around a shared sense of pride and achievement.”

Sports development remains a core part of Bona Life’s broader strategy, with investments spanning football, golf, swimming and other disciplines aimed at encouraging discipline, teamwork and healthy living.

“These values closely mirror our role as a life insurer,” Keakabetse said. “Just as we help individuals and families prepare for and protect their futures, sport equips people with the confidence, resilience and life skills needed to succeed.”

She also noted the importance of preserving Botswana’s football legacy by recognising former players who helped shape the sport.

“We hope our support contributes to preserving and celebrating Botswana’s rich football heritage by recognising the players whose achievements helped shape the sport and inspire generations of Batswana.”

For organisers, Bona Life’s continued partnership provides stability and strengthens the credibility of the event.

Organizer Sekhana Koko said the sponsorship reflects trust in the concept and its growth.

“Having them come on board as title sponsor in 2025 and continuing that partnership this year demonstrates confidence in the concept, its impact and its growth potential,” said Koko.

He added that sustained sponsorship is essential for building long-term sporting events.

“For us as organisers, Bona Life’s continued support provides stability and credibility. Sponsorships are most meaningful when sustained over time because they allow events to grow, improve the experience for supporters and participants, and create a lasting impact.”

Koko said the Clash of Legends is more than a match, describing it as a cultural and sporting celebration.

“It is a celebration of Botswana’s football heritage, an opportunity to honour players who contributed immensely to the game, and a platform that reconnects supporters with some of their favourite football personalities.”

He added that the weekend event also promotes unity and generates economic activity for local stakeholders.

“Football has a unique ability to bring people together across generations, and Clash of Legends creates an environment where families, supporters and communities can unite around a positive sporting experience.”
