GAZETTE REPORTER

Gaborone United will host a tri-nations club pre-season tournament from 17 to 22 July at the National Stadium in Gaborone.

The tourney will feature Namibian league champions African Stars Soccer Club (SC) and South African club Supersport United.

African Stars tournament

Styled the African Stars Pre-Season 2024/2025 Tournament, the first game will see Namibia’s African Stars face Pretoria-based Supersport United on the first day. African Stars will face the home side, Gaborone United, on the second day of the tournament.

African Stars and Supersport United have already commenced their preparations for the 2024/2025 season after reporting for pre-season duty late last month.

The teams have started ahead of their hosts who will start their pre-season preparations by participating in the African Stars tournament.

Star-studded appearance

Supersport United started their pre-season training on 28 June. The Pretoria side is expected to bring a start-studded lineup to Gabs, with many of their big-name players already in pre-season mode.

The likes of star striker Bradley Grobler, versatile player Lyle Lakay and former Bafana Bafana star Thulani Hlatshwayo are expected to grace the pre-season competition.

Experienced head coach Gavin Hunt will also be in Botswana to oversee his team’s preparations for another busy season ahead.

Familiar foes

GU faced South African opposition in a pre-season outing last year in which they locked horns with Mamelodi Sundowns and Supersport.

They faced Sundowns on two occasions in July at the Royal Marang Campus in Rustenburg. GU then faced Supersport at Megawatt Park in Johannesburg on 15 July last year.
