- An invitation has been extended to Zambia

The stage is set for an exhilarating showdown as table tennis enthusiasts from across southern Africa converge on Botswana for the highly-anticipated Phoenix Botswana Assurance Table Tennis Independence Grand Finale.
Scheduled to commence on Independence Day, the event promises to be a riveting spectacle that will kick off at 8 am at the BNYC Multi-Purpose Hall in Gaborone.
According to the spokesperson of Botswana Table Tennis Association (BTTA), Tshegofatso Malepa, a warm invitation has been extended to the Zambia Table Tennis Association to participate in this prestigious tournament.
Peak competitive form
In a telephone interview with this publication this week, Malepa emphasised the deliberate move to foster regular competition between the two nations.
“The presence of Zambia at this event should bring out the competitiveness between athletes,” she said.
While celebrating Independence Day, the primary objective of the tournament is to keep local athletes engaged and in peak competitive form even during the holiday season.
Malepa highlighted BTTA’s commitment to ensuring athletes remain active throughout the year, helping them stay prepared for top-tier competitions while steering clear of potential career-damaging distractions such as excessive alcohol consumption.
Phoenix Assurance Group
The 2023 Independence Grand Finale boasts the proud sponsorship of Phoenix Assurance Group with a substantial prize pool totalling P26,600 up for grabs during the tournament.
Malepa is hoping for enthusiastic participation from the association’s affiliated local players and some talented Zambian contenders. However, official confirmation from the neighbouring country is still pending.
Interested participants keen on joining this thrilling tournament are encouraged to register through the BTTA where the deadline is midnight on 28 September.
Entrance absolutely free
Malepa disclosed that one the most appealing aspects of this sports fest is that entrance is absolutely free.
“This inclusive approach aims to encourage a large turnout of spectators, creating an electrifying atmosphere as they cheer on their favourite athletes,” she said.
“Whether you are a dedicated table tennis fan or simply enjoy the excitement of competitive sports, the Independence Grand Finale is an event not to be missed.”
